Walking with Cavemen (BBC)

June 18th, 2008 by Sean

The BBC has a rich history of quality documentaries that involve science and history. From the creators of the popular Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Beasts come the 2003 television documentary Walking with Cavemen. This series focused on human evolution and attempted to put the viewer in the shoes of our most ancient ancestors.

It’s first worth noting that I’m a huge science geek. Studying evolution is a hobby of mind and I usually soak up anything that can be found on the Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel, or the new Science Channel that are related to evolution.

Netflix Set-Top Boxes Sold Out

June 15th, 2008 by Sean

It looks like the folks at Netflix underestimated just how large the demand was for streaming movies directly to your home. According to multiple reports, the Roku set-top box that Netflix recently promoted has alread sold out.

California based Netflix is pushing Roku hard to produce more boxes quickly to appease anxious consumers. This is just step one in a plan to move Netflix’s rental service predominately online by 2010. They are currently working hard with DVD manufacturers and video game systems (XBox 360 perhaps?) to increase their distribution.

Soon after it started I was wondering why exactly he brought this over. After a few minutes I started to see why. How’s Your News is a great movie that can you change the way you see the world.

I am not sure how I stumbled onto Down By Law but I was so happy I that I did. Down By Law is a film by Jim Jarmusch, and was recently released as a part of the Criterion Collection.

Down By Law is a movie about 3 strange characters who wind up getting locked away in a New Orleans. 2 were framed and one committed an unlikely murder. Tom Waits, John Lurie and Roberto Benigni play the 3 felons.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

June 9th, 2008 by George

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a western movie that I say would be considered more good then great.

This movie is about Robert Ford and Jesse James and the strange relationship that they have that leads to murder of Jesse James. If you are looking for an action movie, this is not it. I would classify it more as a drama.

American Beer

June 7th, 2008 by George

American Beer is a documentary about 5 “beer lovers” who travel to 38 brewers in 40 days across the USA. They stay away from the big breweries like Budweiser and such, and only tour craft beer breweries, or microbreweries.

This movie is not really exciting, but it does have some funny parts. I think it is more informative and gives you a better look at the explosion of craft beer in the USA. There are some excellent interviews with some of the “brewmasters” and owners of these breweries and some amazing stats on beer consumption in the USA. Here are just a few:

So I decided to finally see what all the hype was about and wasted a few hours of my life watching the POS that is JUNO. For some reason this movie was nominated for numerous awards and I believe it actually won them.

Juno is a 16 year girl who boinks some dude she does love, gets knocked up, pussies out on getting an abortion and decides to give the sweet new born away to a family that is better fit to handle a baby, and then decides to fall in love with the dude that knocked her up.
